In his latest update, CBS3 meteorologist Mike Skurko writes, "A few light snowflakes have been spotted across western Massachusetts just before sunrise, but the main event will not be getting started for a few more hours. State police Sgt. Alan Joubert said state Department of Transportation personnel have pre-treated Interstate 91 and Interstate 291 this morning and that motorists may notice the roadways look wet. She said it has proven to be a more efficient anti-icer than the liquid magnesium chloride that it has been using for the past five years or so.

All commercial airline activity at Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks will stop at 1:30 p.m. Friday, said John J. Wallace, the airport’s director of communications.

“That’s an airline decision, not an airport decision. It’s affecting airports up and down the east coast,” Wallace said. “What we are hearing from our airline station managers is that they hope to be back up and running in about 24 hours, so that would be sometime Saturday afternoon.”

The airport itself will stay open for emergency operations and military use as long as the weather allows, he said.

Wallace said travelers should keep in contact with their airlines via the airline’s website and Twitter feed. It might take a few days for the air travel system to sort itself out with aircrews and equipment stranded in places they should not be.

Wallace described Friday morning as “hustle and bustle” with morning flights heading out on schedule.

There are scratches and tire tracks of pavement visible on Main, Congress and Dwight streets in downtown Springfield, but the rest is covered with snow.

There was a plow working downtown streets.

On I-291 eastbound, traffic is going about 40 mph. There are cars going in both directions, but traffic is probably about 80 percent less than normal. Visibility looks to be fine. There’s snow blowing around, but you can see a car’s lights.

The road is covered with snow, but definitely drivable.

I saw two plows on I-291 westbound, and also saw at least four pickups and other trucks that had plows but were not plowing.


I’ve been on the Pike about two minutes and just saw the first vehicles going in the opposite direction, one a snowplow. I’m the only one in the eastbound lane.


Visibility is worse, seems like a snowy rain. The lack of lighting makes visibility much shorter. You can see maybe a block and a half ahead.


The road surface is snowier and more slippery than I-291 and the Springfield streets were.

BOSTON (AP) — More than 190,000 customers are without electricity in Massachusetts as a snowstorm begins to intensify with gusty winds.

By 10 p.m. Friday, NStar had reported more than 110,000 customers without power and National Grid had nearly 80,000. Most of the outages are in southeastern Massachusetts and Cape Cod, where wet heavy snow and winds gusting over 50 mph have been reported.

The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency had reported about 40,000 customers without power just two hours earlier Friday.

State officials have said about 2,000 utility crews are prepared to respond to storm outages but won't be able to do so until conditions are safe for them.

Springfield police reported no major problems overnight although a growing issue of cruisers getting stuck in the snow prompted them to redeploy in four-wheel drive vehicles during shift change at midnight.

"We had to improvise," said Capt. Larry Brown, adding that the officers used a combination of personal and departmental vehicles.

Brown said major roadways within the city are in pretty good condition. Some side roads have yet to be plowed, police said.

State police in Westfield reported that conditions on the Massachusetts Turnpike, at least from Ludlow to the New York border, are bad.

"The roads are treacherous," said State Trooper Joseph Tetrault. "If people aren't out responding to an emergency, they should stay home."

State police in the Westfield barracks reponded to about a half-dozen stuck vehicles on the overnight shift, including a tanker truck that had been driving westbound in the eastbound lanes of the turnpike near Exit 4 in West Springfield.

Tetrault said when he arrived at the stuck truck at about 11:20 p.m., conditions were so bad that he could barely see five feet in front of his cruiser. Tetrault said the driver told him that he had no idea how he ended up going the wrong way and that he had been following tire tracks in the blinding snow.

Tetrault said he believes the driver may have been following tracks left by a plow that made a U-turn at the emergency crossover in Chicopee.

State police attached to the Shelburne Falls barracks reported no major problems overnight. Like everywhere else, however, driving conditions are poor. "The roads are slick," said Trooper Nick Pellegrino at about 7:20 a.m.

The biggest problem of the night, Pellegrino said, was a series of attempted break-ins to vehicles in a parking lot on Wells Street in Greenfield. The trooper said that judging from the tracks left in the snow it appeared that the suspects, most likely juveniles, appeared to have attempted to have broken in to at least 11 vehicles.

No windows were broken, as police believe the suspects were looking for unlocked vehicles.
