While this would be nice for LDV, Vauxhall and Ford, how exactly would that square with EU competition law? ]]></description></item>

                   <pubDate>Wed, 22 Apr 2009 15:11:00 GMT</pubDate><description><![CDATA[No, the Budget Report is pretty sketchy on electric and other 'ultra-low carbon' vehicles, apart from saying that there will be nothing until 2011:<br /> <br /> <em>£250 million of funding was announced in January 2009, and in April Ultra-Low Carbon Vehicles in the UK announced that:<br /> </em> 
<ul>
<li><em>up to £20 million will be available to support the roll-out of charging infrastructure needed to grow the market for ultra-low carbon cars. Cities and regions, in conjunction with the private sector, will be able to bid for this seed funding; and</em> </li>
<li><em>the majority of the £250 million will be used to reduce up-front costs of early electric and plug-in hybrid cars by between £2,000 and £5,000. The Government will begin discussions with the automotive and finance industries, as well as other key stakeholders, to explore how best to deliver this incentive from 2011.</em> </li>

Electric vehicles will also improve local air quality as they have zero emissions at the tail pipe.<br> <br> </em> Why not incentivise low-carbon vehicles without specifying that they have to be electric or hybrid? There's plenty of potential in internal combustion yet, given alternative fuels, technology like <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homogeneous_Charge_Compression_Ignition" title="Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition" target="_blank">HCCI </a> and improved traffic control.<em></em> ]]></description></item>

It seems that there is no limit on the capital allowance increase: the 40% allowance is available on ANY amount of capital spend in the 2009-10 tax year.<br /> According to Simon Chapman, if you were spending £150,000 on trucks and were taxed at the Small Companies' rate, that would be worth £4,200 to you. If you were being taxed at the main rate of corporation tax, it would be worth £5,600. ]]></description></item>
